What is "Spy Wednesday"?
This is the fourth day of the Holy Week or Passion Week after Palm Sunday.
Today, Wednesday marks a day in which the chief priest and the elders of the people gathered together and plotted to arrest Jesus by stealth and to kill him. (Matthew 26:3-4)
Furthermore, this is called “Spy Wednesday” or “Holy Wednesday” since it is traditionally considered as the day in which Judas Iscariot conspired or “spied” against Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Judas was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus and upon receiving the thirty pieces of silver, “he sought an opportunity to betray him” (Matthew 26:16).
Today, Wednesday was also the day in which Jesus was anointed with “spikenard” or “pure nard” during a meal by Mary (Matthew 26:6-13, John 12:1-8).
- What is “spikenard”?
- Why was this “spikenard” placed upon Jesus’ head?
The word “spikenard” is not found in many translations but in the King James Version. Most other bible translations call it “pure nard.”
Why call it “spikenard”?
Spikenard is a strong distinctive aroma or fragrance and is similar to an essential oil that holds fast and embraces the skin and hair. The “spikenard” is the root of an Indian plant (Nardostachys jatamansi), of the family of Valeriance which grows in the Himalaya mountains. The reason why it is called “spikenard” is because of its hairy spikes shooting out from the root.
When Jesus was at the “house of Simon the leper” and brought with her “an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head” (Matthew 26:6-7), in John 12:3 tells us, “The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.”
The ointment prepared was not only highly valued, but it was difficult to obtain (Himalaya mountains), thus the reason being “very expensive.” In the ancient near east, the “spikenard” symbolizes the very best, and to give the best meant that she gave away what was most precious to her, more than life itself. Many criminals would steal and kill to take it, yet she freely gave away what was most valuable to Mary, and that was Jesus.
We know biblically the “spikenard” was in preparation for Jesus’ burial (Matthew 26:12), but to this woman, she gave from her heart a pleasing aroma offering to the Lord, and a complete surrender of giving. This was true love, and unlike the relationships of this world, her offering of the best is the fragrance and presence of its aroma that will last through the centuries. In her memory, the Bible says, “Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her” (Matthew 26:13).
I am wondering when Jesus felt the lash of the whip on his body and the blood pouring out if the fragrance of the “spikenard” was greater than the smell of blood.
I am wondering when Jesus was carrying the heavy wooden cross in the heat of the day, the fragrance covered over his sweat and the stench of the mob that wanted his death.
I am wondering if the smell of the “spikenard” encouraged Jesus who had no sleep, walking in pain, blood gushing out, and the mob spewing hate.
I am wondering when the nails pierced his hands and feet, the aroma which clung to His skin will be the fragrance in which Jesus will inhale.
I am wondering if Mary knew that her valuable gift would help Jesus remember why He did what He had to do for the sake of our souls.
I am wondering if Mary knew that she was the first to anoint the Son of God with a fragrance and a pleasing aroma to be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins of the world.
A challenge to all of us to consider and pray on this "Holy Wednesday":
- Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you gave your best offering to Jesus?
- What is the most valuable to you and would you be open to give this precious gift to Christ and allow it to be a pleasing aroma to Him?
Prayer: Holy Spirit, I pray that you will show us, give us clarity, and confirmation on what we can give to you as a pleasing aroma. Convict our hearts Lord and give us a clear understanding so that our decisions will be a fragrance that will fill your house. Lord, please strengthen us to give it away in peace so that we have no attachment to this world. Lord, I pray that we will be the spikenard that will be the love being poured out to you. In Jesus mighty name. Amen and Amen.
