Racism
I'm Korean on the outside but my Identity in my soul is with Jesus and my affiliation is with His kingdom. So this article will come from the lens of my identity with Christ and not the skin of my fading body.
Racism is all around us and has been around for thousands of years and will exist as long as the devil is alive and in control. Remember, racism is one of many manifestations of what is going on in the human heart. This is a spiritual battle and only God who is Spirit can help us overcome and give hope to a spiritually dying world.
The spirit of racism is hatred and control. Underneath this manifestation, the devil’s goal is to divide and conquer because he came to “steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10a). So, if you are seeing the devil dividing people and stealing their joy from the Lord, and conquering over God’s spiritual territories (even in churches), then he’s doing a good job. The Bible tells us, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand” (Mark 3:25).
The identity of this verse in John 10:10 is the “thief” and the opposite of a thief is the owner. When the thief steals from the owner, it lays down a path of destruction into the soul of whom his heart rages to steal, kill, and destroy. Throughout history, we can see its witness of destruction and the demon spirit’s working. However, for the believers, “we are not unaware of his schemes” and Satan will not outwit us (2 Cor. 2:11).
First, let’s understand the definition of Racism: (Racism is not just about the color of a person’s skin). Racism includes prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism (hostility, opposition) directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized (a person, group, or concept) treated as insignificant or peripheral.
For me personally, I got called every bad ethnic Asian name you can think of. I came to a small town about 45,000 in the middle of Illinois in the mid-1970s and got into a fistfight within a few months of my arrival. I couldn’t speak English and got called as “___________” (I’ll let you imagine it). My racial identity is Korean but everyone always said that I should go back to China (to non-Asians, every Asian are put under as Chinese). “How do I go back to China when I’m from Korea?” That was my thought when I was young.
One day, I told my mother what was happening and how I was fighting with Americans, which it felt like once a week at that time. I believe this is what my mother said, “Don’t become the words of others but strive to become who you will be. And don’t fight with them, but build trust and win them over.” (I think this is what she said. After a major heart attack and a major stroke, my memory is not as good as before. Basically, don’t fall into a victim mentality or identity politics but strive to become a victorious character for others to see and imitate.
This is exactly what my oldest brother did. Through him, I actually witnessed my brother winning over and building trust to start working in a factory. The factory needed workers, but when my brother applied for the job, they rejected him, even when they needed help. However, he kept showing up every day and said in broken English, “I work hard. I work for you.” They laughed at him, cussed him out, used racial slurs but my brother never gave up and showed up every day for many months. To everyone’s surprise, they hired him. I asked my brother, “How did they hire you?" and he said, “I wanted them to know that they can trust me and that I will be a hard worker. Plus, our family was desperate for money.” Moreover, the supervisor eventually became a good friend. His good character and hard work won over the doubts of many and gained the trust of his co-workers. It’s interesting that my brothers didn't fall into a victim mentality and depression which was easy for many Koreans to fall into after the Korean War ended.
Still to this day, even to some of our church members, they have experienced some form of prejudice or racism because of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus which started in Wuhan, China. (Most Asian news outlets call this virus the CCP virus). When South Korea became the 2nd highest with the CCP virus and the news spread like wildfire with only bad news, fear struck the entire globe including the United States. Some people thought that being near any Asian, they will catch the CCP virus.
During this period, I saw videos of Asians in America talking about blatant racism from blacks, whites, and anyone else who are non-Asians. The spirit of hate and fear of the unknown will always divide. Why didn’t the news report that over 95% of the cases were all healed from the virus and only reported deaths? Satan’s goal is to divide and news of deaths can only deliver fear and those who believe it will follow it.
Yes, there is RACISM and HATRED and it will always exist.
- If you're from the city of Wuhan (Where the CCP virus outbreak came from), many in other provinces will not let you enter, because you are from Wuhan. Fear and hatred coexist to separate and divide.
- Egyptians hated the Hebrews and turned them into slaves just because of their race.
- My mother was alive during the time Japan took thousands of Koreans as slaves and thousands of women into forced sex trafficking. Just for being Korean.
- In Cambodia, they estimated the “Killing Fields” to be more than a million people from the Communist Party. This hatred manifested into killing people with differing political views, intellectuals, ethnic Vietnamese, Thai, Christians, and even Buddhist monks, and more.
- Even people with the same skin and culture can be hated and divided. We see a perfect example between North and South Korea.
- India was once under one country, but once Britain left its rule, then the country split into two. Pakistan dominated by Muslims and India, mostly Hindu. Racism divides.
- Even in India, you have separation of class with castes that are traditionally associated with such as high-ranking Brahmans; a middle group of farmers and artisan groups (potters, barbers, and carpenters); and the low caste of "Untouchables" (leatherworkers, butchers, launderers, cleaners and so forth). Racism divides.
The division is still rampant in all aspects of life, separation of marriages (divorces), family divisions, churches separating, friends hating, and so forth. If the heart doesn’t have God, then something else will come in and divide. Satan’s goal is to divide and conquer.
Racism and hate run deep because Satan has taken deep root. Even in the Bible, Cain killed his brother Abel because of hate (the root of jealousy in the heart, mind filled with hate, the manifestation was the killing). Aquila and Pricilla were kicked out of Rome because they were Jews by Emperor Claudius. Jews hated the Samaritans and the Samaritans hated the Jews because of the location of true worship.
Where do we begin?
I realized that building the bridge needed to begin with me before I build bridges onto others and to eliminate racism and hatred had to begin in my own heart and mind. I knew that if my heart and mind don’t connect with God, then I would end up connecting to the world, think like the social media narratives, manifest it out and unknowingly work along with the devil’s schemes.
I needed my heart to build a bridge to my mind about who Jesus is. Once our hearts and mind connect to Jesus then our soul and identity of who we are can manifest itself out through the lens of Jesus. God reminds us “For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” (Romans 5:10). This is how we eliminate racism and hatred within and through loving God, we then can love our neighbor. If we try to love our neighbor first, we’ll burn out because we don’t have the sustaining love that’s needed by the Holy Spirit who gives graciously. Only God who is Spirit (John 4:24a) can give an abundant spirit of love for those who seek it.
This is why God tells us to love him first from the Old Testament to the New Testament and to love our neighbor next as the greatest two commandments (Mark 12:30-31). Only Jesus can help eliminate racism and hatred within because God has to work in our hearts first for us to love others. Then the outflow of our thoughts become, “there is no distinction between Jew and Greek for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:12-13).
Wow! What a beautiful picture to eliminate hate.
Paul a Jew, hated the Christians and allowed for the death of Stephen who was a Jew and he ravaged the church and went house to house and dragged men and woman who believed in Jesus to prison (Acts 8: 3) Because of this persecution, Philip a jew and a good friend of Stephen, who just died decided to go and preach to the Samaritans where they didn’t like the Jews. Philip’s heart and mind changed because Jesus who is a Jew went to a territory where tradition tells to hate one another. But only through this love of Jesus, was this tradition broken and bridges built between two lands of physical and spiritual division. Philip’s spiritual unity with Jesus broke the physical barrier of hatred.
This means that:
- You can help eliminate hate
- Your marriages can be saved
- Your family can be restored
- Your friends can reconcile
- You will build bridges to others
- You will have a life with meaning and purpose
- You will have life and have it to the fullest
Conclusion
How did we get to where we are now?
We have lost the purpose in which we were created. God made us in His image and gave us a life with purpose and meaning. Lose this very essence and we lose our purpose and meaning in life.
What must we do individually to fight against racism?
Jesus set the perfect example of breaking the tradition of racism and hatred and conquering in the Spirit to build bridges and give hope with a fulfilling life. Yes, the bible says that the “Thief came to steal and kill and destroy” but in the next part, God said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). God’s heart is to give Life to those who believe in Him and desire it.
Individually for those who do not know Jesus must take the first step to get our hearts right before God and connect our soul with Him who made us in His image. Without correcting our hearts beyond ourselves, we will not be able to help those next to us and our fight against racism and hatred to others will be short-lived.
Then we must “Love” God with all our hearts, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). Love is an action and not just a thought or belief, but real heartfelt action to the one that has given us life and purpose. When we act and demonstrate towards loving God and obedience to His Word, He then in return fights for His children. We are the recipient of His love, and He moves our hearts and shows us how to love others and even to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). To be honest, this is not easy but very hard and that’s why we need the help of the Holy Spirit to work in our own hearts and mind and move our hands and feet for others. This is our pursuit, our aim, our goal, and God will do the rest.
Instead of throwing rocks, you will be throwing flowers when you understand and act on God’s love.
The kids that I fought growing up in a small town in Illinois eventually became my good friends. God taught me to build trust with them. Eventually, they didn’t see me as the only Asian kid in town, but one of their friends. I’m glad that I listened to my mother who listened to God. Thank you mom and thank you, Jesus! Also, once my brothers opened up a martial arts school, many of them joined and I had the chance to showcase how hard I kicked. I didn’t take any revenge, just kicked a litter harder than I normally would have:)
