Separation of Families
Inspired by Faith. Motivated by Truth. Challenged by Christ.
It's been awhile since I've been watching the news and WOW! Things have gotten very heated over many different issues, especially the issue of "Family Separation" which I know very well about on a personal level as an immigrant myself and a US citizen. Please read the story at the end of this article.
So, one church member had asked me, what I thought about our current president and this was my response, "Is our God, the God of four years? Is our God, the God of 8 years? Do we have a time limitations on our God?" I waited for him to respond, then he understood what I was trying to get at. I asked him one more question, "What does it mean when we say God is Sovereign?" He wasn't fully sure. To keep it simple, another way to say God is Sovereign is to say "God is in Control."
Jesus understood the sovereignty of the Father. God knew the Jews were facing tremendous hardships under the Roman occupation. The Jews hated the Romans, and they all had legitimate reasons to hate them and respond back in anger. However, when Jesus picked up the Roman coin for tax and asked, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said, "Ceaser's." Then Jesus responds, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:19-21).
I asked our church member, "Can you first give to God, what needs to go to Him first? Let's first deal with all of your personal areas and get our hearts right with God. Let's love our Lord with ALL our hearts, minds, soul, and strength (Mark 12:30). Then love our neighbor and worry about the politics later because the Bible tells us, "And we know that for those who love God ALL things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).
I reminded him that all Christians are called to do the "Great Commission" (Matthew 28:16-20). As Christians, this is our calling in life, yet for many followers, the political debates have taken over our commission from the Lord. There is a reason why Matthew 28:16-20 is not a common commission, but out of all the commissions in the Bible, this is called the "Great Commission" which have been secondary to much of many people's minds and hearts.
Let me give you a quiz for followers of Christ:
1. How often per day (minutes or hours), do you think and talk about the Great Commission or things about the Bible or Christ?"
2. How often per day (minutes or hours), do you talk or think about politics, entertainment, sports or just non-God relates topics?
3. Which of the first two has taken up the greater amount?
The Bible reminds us in Colossians 3:1-2, "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."
Well, should you take no action then?
Should you not participate in politics or trending news?
Of course not, but "Walk in the Spirit of the Lord" so your judgment or actions are not of the flesh or for the gratification of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). Don't let your flesh get in the way of right judgment. Ask yourselves, "Are these actions from the Lord or are they from me?" As you work, play, and fellowship with others, know that God desires for you to be the "Salt and Light" on earth (Matthew 5:13).
We understand in the gospel messages about a group called the Zealots (1st-century political movement) and how they wanted to overthrow the Roman government. The word zealot derives from the Greek "zelotes," meaning “emulator or (zealous) follower.” We are all "zelotes" but what are we truly zealous for? Jesus even had a Zealot in his group. His name was Simon, who eventually became zealous for Jesus more than the politics. Things of God became greater than the things of this world. All the disciples eventually became aware of this and placed God's priorities before their own. They are the patriarchs of our faith, who led a cause that would change a person, change their communities, change their country and impact the whole world.
Lastly, I leave you with this short story.
There is a Korean family that was separated. They took away their mother from the kids. In our Korean culture, it is normal and right to discipline (physical) our children. This is part of our Asian culture. The discipline was short and simple with no abuse. I know the mother well, and her kids love her crazy. However, on that day, the child told the school counselor and the school counselor reported this to the police. Even with no signs of physical abuse, the police came and arrested her in front of her family on a Saturday afternoon. Even with social services stating clearly in their letter of no physical abuse in the home after their investigation, the mother was not able to return to her family and to her children. The mother and the kids are not illegal immigrants but in fact, citizen's of United States of America. Eventually, after the court hearings, the mother was able to return to her family and kids after six months of pain and agony. Separation of a mother to her kids should not have taken place, but it did happen to a US citizen.
Because of this incident in which I witnessed first hand, I have noticed this type of separation of families even with US citizens and their children across the United States. Still yet, God reminds me, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).
For followers of Christ, let's bring as many people to heaven before the Lord calls us home. Because if we were to die the next day, I don't think whoever is in the white house or any of their policies will make an impact in heaven. Let's try to implement God's policies here on earth for as many people as we can first, then life will have a greater meaning and your sense of accomplishment will far exceed human victories.
Thank you and many blessings to you.
