Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10) Part 2.
So, what would it look like through scripture of “ Being still and know that He is God?”
In this scene, we have Saul who becomes the anointed King of all Israel. (He is the first king) But from the midst of Saul’s warriors, there is one that became the mightiest and his name was David.
David was so well known in his victories that they even sang songs, “Saul struck down his thousands and David his ten thousands” (1 Samuel 21:11). However, for Saul, his jealousy took over and God’s Spirit had left him. Many times Saul planned and acted upon killing David but all had failed.
David lived a life of pain and suffering, hiding from his own king who would do anything to kill him, even killing 85 priests and all that lived in the city of Nob, including men, women, children, and all the animals of flock and herds (1 Samuel 22:18-19).
David became the number one enemy of Israel and David fearing for his life hid in secret places, hoping not to be captured. But then an opportunity arose for David to kill Saul. David’s soldiers spoke to convince David to kill Saul, while he was alone.
When I first read this in the Bible many years ago, and as a young person of faith, I thought, “there is an opportunity to take revenge and to fight back. David didn’t do anything wrong. This was not his fight nor his battle. David just did what Saul ordered him to do and he did it well. Why does David need to suffer?”
“David doesn’t know how much longer this fight will last. How much longer does David need to keep running away from a king who will stop at nothing to kill him, because of jealousy?” was what I was thinking. These and many questions kept running in my mind.
Finally an opportunity to take revenge. David lost his family, his wife (whom Saul had given), his identity, his reputation, and his name was all at a loss. “So David does have the right to fight back?” was what my flesh wanted. This is our human nature to fight back, especially when we didn’t do anything wrong. When others accuse you of something wrong or say hurtful things to you, it is in our human nature and in our flesh to fight back.
But God’s nature is different and especially when Christ dwells in you, our old nature must die and our new nature (Holy Spirit dwelling) must now take dominance over our flesh. This is then where God clearly speaks to David, “Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.”
David didn’t kill Saul but just cut off a piece of his robe. Why?
After David cut off a piece of his robe the Lord had spoken in his heart, He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the lord’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed” (1 Samuel 24:4-6).
After David had spoken directly to Saul and helping him to realize that he didn’t kill Saul when he had the opportunity, they departed their ways. By David’s honor and reverence to a king, even though he didn’t deserve the honor, David stayed faithful to God more than man. He didn’t need to fight or take revenge on God’s behalf. Yes, David did suffer because of Saul’s pursuit to kill him, but ultimately God allowed Saul to die in battle.
There was another occasion even after this for David to kill Saul because Saul and his men were in a deep sleep (1 Samuel 26:12). Even with all these opportunities, David did not fight back because God was protecting David, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:10).
David understood what it meant to “be still and know that I am God” and because David had a strong relationship with our Heavenly Father, God was the mover of mountains in his life.
So if you want God to move the mountains, then establish a firm foundation with Jesus in prayer and Word. Start to activate the faith in which God has called you. Daily grow your relationship with the Lord.
Stop the battle of your daily life and take a moment of silence in prayer with you and God alone. During your prayer give up all your burdens and cry out to the things of your heart but take an important moment towards the end of your prayer and “Be still and know that He is God.”
Will you today just take a few minutes of your time and just be silent. Turn off all your devices and simply tell God, “Lord, here I am. Please speak into my mind and convict my heart. My flesh and my human nature is getting in the way of your voice. Fight the battles of my enemies and help my mind and heart fully surrender to you.”
Here are some things to consider for your Bible Study:
- Did you ever take revenge?
- How did you overcome the enemies in your mind and heart?
- In Matthew 5:44 says to "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," (How can we do this?)
- How do we do what David did and "be still and know that He is God."
